Recruitment

Please find below some general tips for when you are recruiting new staff for your pub.

  • Your job advert should be clear, concise and upbeat. click here to view a couple of examples you could use as a guide.
  • You should always personally meet any future employee in your business.
  • Always ensure you ask the right questions and give the correct information – What do you expect from your employees? What are the expected working hours? What are the rates of pay? What are the expected standards relating to hygiene, cleanliness and best working practices? What do you see their commitment to the business to be? What future prospects can you offer to your employees?
  • Ensure you get at least one reference from a previous employer.
  • If employing a chef, you should ask him or her to cook you a dish.
  • If employing waiting staff, ask them to work over a lunch time for an hour or two.
  • You should trial all employees on a months basis to ensure they fit into your business before offering them any firm commitment or contract.

  • You should set any working parameters for the shift/ working day from the onset, for example when and where they are allowed to take cigarette breaks and rules with regards to eating and drinking during a shift etc.
  • Advertise for staff in the pub via posters, in the local paper, through local recruitment agencies, the Job Centre or try looking on recruitment websites.
